On the curve where Phoenicia’s Main Street turns into the Old Plank Road, there’s a dilapidated silvery structure, overgrown with vines, that was once Elmer’s Diner. It’s said that on the opening day of fishing season, reported Chichester photographer and fly fisherman Mark Loete, “It used to be standing room only at the diner. One of the most famous fishing pools on the Esopus was behind it, at Elmer’s Bend. People used to bring in a trout, and Elmer would slice it up and fry it for them.”
