A satirical quote often found making its way through the social network sites reads, ‘“Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet,’ signed Abraham Lincoln.” All too often, what passes through portals of the Internet lacks proper vetting and thus, when it was reported on Facebook through the pages of at least two gun-rights advocacy groups that the Onteora Central School District was conducting a gun survey, an angry viral reaction spread quickly across that known universe. The survey was posted on those pages in the form of a photograph that asked questions such as gender, political party affiliation, gun ownership and if so how many. These groups (two in particular, though they may or may not be the origin of the controversy) have accused the district of trying to keep tabs on gun owners, believing that the data is collected for the Federal/State Government, and for the ultimate purpose of confiscating their guns.
