What could be better than sailing down the river on a sunny autumn afternoon? Continuing its Pumpkin Sail series of publicly offered two-hour-long sails, the sloop Clearwater will dock at the Hudson River Maritime Museum in the Rondout District of Kingston this Saturday, October 15. There will be deck tours from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; a shoreside festival from 1:30 to 5 p.m.; and public sailing time from 2 until 4 p.m. When the Clearwater heads out onto the river at 2 p.m., passengers will get the opportunity to raise the sail, learn about Hudson River life and history and enjoy music provided by the crew. These Pumpkin Sails last two hours and cost $50 per person, $35 for members and $15 for children age 12 and under. On Sunday, October 16, the Clearwater will be docked in Beacon in a similar fashion to celebrate the Beacon Sloop Club’s Pumpkin Festival starting at 11 a.m.

The Clearwater organization’s continuing mission is to inspire and energize the next generation of environmental leaders, and to protect and preserve the Hudson River environs. The sloop has become “America’s Environmental Flagship,” named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 for its role in the environmental movement.

This month, the Clearwater will revisit the sloop’s historical role as a cargo vessel, delivering not only music and education, but also food donations to local food banks. The public is invited to bring non-perishable food items to Pumpkin Sail events that will be delivered at the next port of call, replenishing both grocery items and communal goodwill to the many river towns affected by the floodwaters of recent tropical storms. For more information about Clearwater’s food donation drive, please contact Maija Niemisto at or call (845) 265-8080, extension 7115. To book a reservation for a Pumpkin Sail or get more information, contact Linda Richards at or call (845) 265-8080, extension 7105. Visit to see Clearwater’s complete Pumpkin Sail schedule.
