With liberty and justice for all, Independence Day Weekend 2011 will start and end with a bang in our local communities. The festivities begin on Saturday, July 2 in the Town of New Paltz, as New Paltz Celebrations presents its annual Independence Celebration at the Ulster County Fairgrounds. Gates open at 5 p.m. for a family-friendly evening of fun culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at dusk.

The popular event regularly draws crowds of 3,000-5,000.

“It’s going to be an especially significant celebration this year, with the passage of the Equality of Marriage Act. Even though our country has a long history of granting personal freedom and personal rights, there have been, throughout history, exclusions to that: slavery, women not having the right to vote. Now we have marriage equality. This year will be special,” said Supervisor Toni Hokanson.

Event-goers can picnic or patronize a selection of food vendors. Live entertainment will include blues, gospel, R&B and country music -- by the Holmes Brothers and The Big Joe Fitz Band -- as well as children’s activities.

“It’s a fun event that you can attend for free. There’s no admission fee. We’ve got fantastic music, wonderful fireworks and it’s just a great celebration for families,” said Hokanson.

The Ulster County Fairgrounds are located at 249 Libertyville Road in New Paltz. A rain date is schedule for Sunday, July 3. For more information, call 255-0604, ext. 1 or visit www.townofnewpaltz.org.

The Town of Lloyd Independence Day Celebration will be held Saturday, July 2 -- with a special opportunity for Ulster County residents to continue the festivities on Monday, July 4 at the Walkway Over the Hudson.

Festivities kick off at Village Field with a hot air balloon launch at 6 p.m. It’s the only Ulster County launch point for the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce Balloon Festival 2011. The balloon is sponsored by Quality Environmental Solution & Technologies, Inc. of Wappingers Falls. Prior to launch, visitors are welcomed to watch the balloon fill up on the field.

From 6 p.m. on, enjoy an evening of food, drink and festivities. Highland businesses and the First United Methodist Church will offer al fresco dining and a host of fair favorite food. Enjoy a live music performance by Rico Suave’s Chimps in Tuxedo.

At dark, the Town of Lloyd Annual Fireworks Display begins. Bring family and friends, unfurl your blankets on the grass, and witness as a spectacular pyrotechnic pastiche paints the sky. Parking lots fill quickly for this popular annual event, so viewers are encouraged to arrive early.

All Town of Lloyd events are free and open to the general public. For more information, call 691-2144 or visit www.townoflloyd.com.

For those who haven’t had their fill of fireworks, Monday, July 4 marks the huge City of Poughkeepsie July 4th Fireworks Spectacular, visible from the banks of Ulster County and Walkway Over the Hudson. Walkway Over the Hudson is selling a limited number of wrist bands the enable holders to view the show from 212 feet above the Hudson River. Wrist bands are $10 each and must be purchased in advance. They are required for ages 6+, and available for purchase in the Town of Lloyd at Gateway Diner, Mariner’s on the Hudson and Vigneto’s Cafe.

That night, Walkway closes to the general public at 5:30 p.m. and reopens at 6:30 p.m. for wrist-band wearers. The fireworks are scheduled to being after 9 p.m.

The rain date is Tuesday, July 5. Tune in to Hudson Valley radio stations for weather and event updates. No bicycles, skates, skateboards, dogs, coolers, alcohol or smoking permitted. No shuttle bus service; attendees are encouraged to carpool. For more information call 454-9649 or visit www.walkway.org.
