The tradition is a mere 234 years old, and one not readily abandoned in Kingston. Once again, the law firm of Mainetti, Mainetti & O’Connor is gifting the City with the $15,000 cost of the annual fireworks display, and the gathering at T. R. Gallo Park in the Rondout to witness the spectacle will take place on Sunday, June 26. Due to the downturn in the economy, however, there will be no live entertainment or vendors this year, as the City can’t justify spending the money while jobs are being eliminated. A scaled-back event, perhaps; but in keeping with the community’s sharing-and-caring spirit, the show goes on.
The fireworks will begin when it’s good and dark – around 9:45 p.m. this Sunday evening. Try one of the outdoor restaurants on the Strand for an amazing view of the show, or book tickets for a fireworks-viewing boat ride. Or just bring yourselves downtown for some old-fashioned, inexpensive socializing while the sky is lit up in celebration of our nation’s independence. Be there, and wave your flag in honor of the revolution that got us here.
