Joy Bryan Bacon
Joy Bryan Bacon, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and author, passed away peacefully to music on Friday, Nov. 26, 2010 in her hometown of New Paltz, with her family by her side.
Joy was one of seven children, born to Hazel and James Bryan of Mill Neck, Long Island on May 3, 1928. She attended Miss Hall’s School in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and Bennington College in Vermont, and later completed a liberal arts degree at Empire State College. Between 1949 and 1952 she lived in England, traveled in Europe and worked with children on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. She married Maurice Warder Bacon Jr., an architect/engineer in 1953 and later settled in Westchester County. Together they raised six children, along with a multitude of animals and welcomed friends from around the world.
She wrote articles for Yankee Magazine, Readers Digest and the popular Oliver Bean series for children. She taught piano and guitar and nurtured the talents and creativity in her children and grandchildren.
From the 1970s to the 1990s she was the principal organist at the Episcopal Churches of St. John and St. Paul and the Methodist Church in Lewisboro. She both loved and was inspired by the family’s summer home at Tunk Lake, Maine and lived in Hancock, Maine with husband Maurice in the 1990s.
Though she asked to be remembered simply as a “maker of tunes and a maker of rhymes,” she will be remembered for her limitless wellspring of always seeing and believing in the best in everyone and everything in all of life. Her family and many friends’ devotion towards her was of great comfort in maintaining her humor, good spirits and courage in coping with cancer.
Services will be held at the Dutch Reformed Church on Huguenot Street in New Paltz at 2 p.m. this Sunday, Dec. 5.
She is survived by sisters Ruth Colgrove and Hazel Tracy and her brother the Venerable Robert Bryan. Her children are Elizabeth Stubbert, Sandra, John, James, Arthur and Nicholas Bacon. She has 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Joy’s spark of life will be sorely missed but will live on in all of her family and friends who loved her so dearly for being Joy.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the American Cancer Society.
