The author Anita Smith referred to the time when the library was first founded 100 years ago this summer in a chapter of her Woodstock: History and Hearsay entitled “The Village Grows.” Alf Evers, in his epochal 1987 History Of An American Town, wrote about the original building’s use as a doctor’s home where the town’s first bathtub resided, and later again in a reference to some controversy after the library’s trustees discharged an aging director in 1952…albeit in a manner that very simply suggested the institution’s role as one of the mainstays of Woodstock.
